Description | Former Rep. Beto O'Rourke is expected later this year to announce a run for governor of Texas in 2022, according to a report from Axios.
It would mark a political comeback for O'Rourke, who represented Texas' 16th congressional district from 2013 to 2019, but lost the 2018 Senate race to Ted Cruz by three points - 51% to 48%, a margin af about 215,000 votes. He also started a campaign to run for president in 2020, but dropped out of the race before the primaries began.
The 48-year-old O'Rourke, one of the state's highest-profile Democrats, trails sitting governor Greg Abbott 42-37 in a poll of the hypothetical matchup done by the Dallas Morning News. That narrowed the gap from a July poll that had O'Rourke trailing Abbott 45-33. |
