DescriptionThe Tories are waiting anxiously to see if local man Paul Halloran will run in the gruelling by election

The Conservatives are going into the Batley and Spen by election knowing they have a decent chance at denting Labour's standing in the north once again.

For Labour the thorn in the side going into this contest will be the firebrand former Bradford West MP George Galloway, who will undermine the party he once stood for at every opportunity. For the Tories, the potential obstacle to success on the horizon is independent local man Paul Halloran.

Mr Halloran ran in the 2019 general election for the Heavy Woollen District Independents on a right wing platform that brought him 12 per cent of the vote - coming third behind Labour and the Tories.

If the Conservatives want to cross the finish line, they will need to pick up some of the votes that went to Mr Halloran 18 months ago - so the party has been waiting anxiously to see whether he will choose to stand this time round.
