DescriptionIn an interview with Jeff Katz of WRVA, Republican gubernatorial candidate Amanda Chase discussed the upcoming GOP nomination convention to choose the Republican nominee for governor.

Question: Do you think this convention coming up in May is rigged?

Chase: I do. And let me tell you why. Chris Marston who is not only Pete Snyder who is one of the candidates for governor’s treasurer, he is the RPV general counsel. He's the referee for the state central committee. He is not neutral. Second thing. The unit [...] is a paid staff of Pete Snyder’s campaign. In other words my delegates, people who are supporting me are turning in their delegate forms to a paid member of Pete Snyder's campaign. He was the acting unit chair. [...]

Chase: They [RPV] are fumbling the ball. Whether it's an intentional effort to try to sabotage my campaign for governor or not is irrelevant. It's happening and they are constantly trying to cripple my campaign -- and if they continue to do that I will run as an independent. [...]

I actually think Chase is correct. It really hurts the credibility of the Virginia GOP to change their primary/caucus system every cycle, because it makes them look like they are singling out individuals (see: Denver Riggleman). They should pick a consistent system and then let the chips fall where they may. (This is not to suggest that Amanda Chase is anything other than a crazy loon and I'm glad she is less likely to be the nominee because of the convention.)

I agree. I don't know why they have abandoned primaries. Snyder would be the strongest candidate in a general, but if he can't win a convention or primary fairly there are legitimacy issues that could haunt him.

I've come to the conclusion that Chase has a valid point here.

The convention isn't 1 person 1 vote. The county delegate votes are weighted votes. There are several reports of Republicans who are trying to vote and are being denied (like conservative commentator Hugh Hewitt a Youngkin supporter). The turnout in a particular county will also determine the weighted value of a county's vote. While weighting does make some sense given Republicans tend to be concentrated in more rural counties, I have not found anywhere a published document of how weighting will be applied.

It would appear that Virginia GOP is trying game the outcome of the convention in favor of some candidates.

Complete rules here.

All the votes cast at Liberty University today and the other 38 locations around Virginia, will be brought back to Richmond and counted starting tomorrow at the Downtown Marriott.

Sunday - Attorney General will be counted
Monday - Lt. Gov will be counted
Tuesday - Governor will be counted

This system seems designed to disenfranchise Republican voters and Republican-leaning voters.

If the live stream and the live results spreadsheet linked from the Virginia GOP actually work, I will offer up some praise for the transparency of this convoluted voting process the Party has setup to nominate November candidates.

Chase has a good point and I wouldn't be surprised if it really was rigged against her, while I don't support her I support primaries over convention even if the convention would get a candidate with better chances of winning.
