Description | Italy’s president has asked Mario Draghi, former president of the European Central Bank, to begin talks to form a new Italian government of national unity as the country battles against the Covid-19 pandemic.
Mr Draghi, one of Italy’s most highly regarded public officials and credited with his decisive ECB action during the eurozone debt crisis, will meet President Sergio Mattarella on Wednesday, the Italian president’s office said.
The shock decision by Mr Mattarella to ask Mr Draghi to form a unity government comes after talks to rebuild a coalition government that collapsed last month broke down on Tuesday.
In a speech on Tuesday evening following news that the talks between the Italian political parties had failed Mr Mattarella said that if a new government could not be formed then the country would have to hold early elections, a move that he said would create uncertainty at a time of serious crisis |
