SPRINGFIELD - More than half of Illinoisans don't want to legalize gay marriage but also don't want a federal constitutional amendment to ban it, a recent Copley News Service poll showed.
But half of those polled support civil unions for gay couples, which would grant some legal rights but would not qualify as marriage. Thirty-three percent oppose civil unions and 17 percent are undecided.
Of the 625 registered voters polled statewide, 60 percent oppose legalizing gay marriage and 27 percent support legalization. Fifty-three percent oppose an amendment to the U.S. Constitution banning gay marriage, while 34 percent support such an amendment. |
