Description | One of the candidates running for the job of overseeing Broward County elections says she wants to make it easier for people to vote by mail by doing something that’s never before been done before in Florida elections — automatically mail ballots to every registered voter in the county.
There’s a big problem: It’s not legal under Florida law.
Jennifer Gottlieb is undeterred. She has advocated for the idea during candidate forums, including one last week conducted by the League of Women Voters of Broward County.
“I also believe that I have demonstrated knowledge of the Florida statutes,” she said. “If I were supervisor of elections, I would mail out a, not a request, but a vote-by-mail ballot to every voter in Broward County, especially during these covid times.”
She repeated her stand during an interview with the South Florida Sun Sentinel Editorial Board. When a reporter pressed her about the legality, Gottlieb said it is permitted. “Yes, it is,” she said. “Supervisors can send out ballots vote by mail.”
But an analysis prepared by the Broward County Attorney’s office addressed that exact question — and stated flatly that it is not allowed under Florida law. |
