DescriptionMalaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad resigned and the cabinet was dissolved Monday, plunging the Southeast Asian country into chaos less than two years after the 94-year-old leader took office in a historic election.

After a day of closed-door meetings and political maneuvers shrouded in confusion and secrecy, the country’s top bureaucrat said that Malaysia’s king had accepted Mr. Mahathir’s resignation. But Mr. Mahathir would continue to lead the government as its interim leader until a new prime minister was sworn in, the official, Mohd Zuki Bin Ali, said.

In a separate statement, Mr. Bin Ali said that all cabinet officials’ positions had been terminated.

Neither the prime minister’s office nor Mr. Mahathir’s political party, Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia, known as Bersatu, provided a reason for the abrupt resignation. Earlier in the day, Bersatu’s president said the party was pulling out of the ruling coalition amid reports of internal turmoil in the party.
