DescriptionFidel Castro’s Cuban revolution wasn’t entirely bad, Democratic presidential front runner Bernie Sanders said in a 60 Minutes interview that aired Sunday night.

“We’re very opposed to the authoritarian nature of Cuba, but, you know, it’s simply unfair to say everything is bad,” Sanders said in an interview with journalist Anderson Cooper.

The comments — sure to rile Cuban exiles in Miami and escalate arguments from moderate Democrats that Sanders is too far left to beat President Donald Trump — came in response to questions about remarks Sanders ,a self-described Democratic socialist, made in a 1980s interview.

During that interview, a clip of which aired on CBS Sunday night, Sanders counted healthcare and education among the reasons that the Cuban people didn’t rise up and overthrow Castro after his 1959 revolution.

And yet, us center-right voters are told to vote "blue no matter who."

Enjoy your McGovern like result. At least you got your progressive "purist."

I'm not willing to call it yet, but I won't be surprised if Trump wins again regardless of the nominee.

I get the sense that "It's simply unfair to say everything is bad about Saudi Arabia because they give their citizens free college" might not be a popular argument either.

It's just difficult to accurately say a place is authoritarian and then pivot into praise of what that government did on other matters.

There's gotta be a way to do message discipline here even if it'll be kinda difficult on some topics.

Sanders will NOT be the Dem nominee & his comments praising Castro, Maduro & other communist regimes will almost certainly drive Jewish Americans to Trump in droves.

If they don't rig the nomination process against him, you are gonna be disappointed.

And need we forget the last Dem President praised Castro too

Like it or not, Sanders WILL be the Democratic nominee. He had overwhelming support from Latinos and substantial support from African-Americans at the Nevada caucuses, which were the missing pieces he didn't have in 2016. The math just isn't going to work for anyone else now, and the race will be over after Super Tuesday. Those of us who are skeptical of him are going to have to give the kids a chance to remake American politics.

I don't think we need to get hyperbolic about how doomed we are. Trump will be a unifying force for Democrats, and Sanders has the ability to attract independents who differ from him ideologically. It will be a tough race but it is absolutely winnable for Democrats.

f the don't rig the nomination process...

The belief on the left and right fringes that there is vote rigging at some massive scale that only they see is troubling. But, whatever, what do I know?

Bernie will be the Democratic nominee for President.

Bernie will get stomped to pieces in November.

Dirty campaigning will come out of the woodwork for this one. Flower bombs, willie Horton and swiftboats will have nothing on this race.

Saying positive things about Castro, even if true, will not play well in mainstream America.

Bernie has health issues.

Bernie is old.

Bernie is divisive.

Although 75 before he became a millionaire, Bernie will be portrayed as a wealthy hypocrite.

Trying to be nominated for VP by the Marxist Socialist Workers Party in 1980 will not help.

Touting being a Socialist for over half a century will not help.

An economy that on the surface is doing well will not help.

Supporters who seem abrasive, over the top and in your face will not help.

I see the choice of VP as no help to Bernie, if he picks someone who is rich or a conservative he will be seen as a fraud. If he picks a moderate he will put people asleep. If he picks someone to the left it will be portrayed as Team Extreme.

I can't stand Trump, never voted for him and never will. Besides possibly Wilson he is our worst President ever, and definitely our most evil.

But he will defeat Bernie for a second term.

Trump will win 49 states in November: the Dems will get wiped out down-ballot: US Senate, Governors, down-ballot statewide offices, legislative contests, etc.,

Problem for the Dems is that IF Sanders is the nominee for POTUS, you can kiss the US House of Representatives goodbye as well as several US Senate seats, Governorships, down-ballot statewide offices & seats in US State Legislatures.

That's a factor for individual races and the candidates they choose.

TONIGHT:

Sanders: "China is another example. China is an authoritarian country, becoming more and more authoritarian. But can anyone deny – I mean, the facts are clear, that they have taken more people out of extreme poverty than any country in history."

it's possible Trump's being overestimated a little bit here.

At least the debate tomorrow isn't on a channel whose viewership usually skews old. Oh.

Everyone seems to be way too pessimistic about November. At least wait for the primaries to end before making any predictions :/

CA Pol Junkie: The silver lining for those of us who are skeptical of Bernie is that alot people will turn out for Bernie and/or not vote third party that another Democratic candidate wouldn't get. Whether this is enough to counterbalance suburban voters who are lost is not known, but it will help with downballot races to have more Democrats/independent lefties voting.

There's now actually some data on that. According to a Morning Consult study, the loss of moderates to Trump if Sanders is the nominee would be counterbalanced by those young people who say they would vote for Sanders but not vote for another Democratic candidate. The problem is that people often lie to pollsters about intending to vote, and the increase in young voter turnout would need to be unprecedented. [Link]
