| Description | While there is plenty of action at the statewide level in Colorado this year, with both the Presidential and the U.S. Senate election, we wanted to take a break from statewide analysis and drill down into specific legislative districts that have been very competitive in years past. Tracking these districts historically is another way to view how the political dynamics are shifting, this time at the local level.
Senate District 19, which covers most of Arvada plus the Jefferson County portion of Westminster, is a good place to start as it was the closest Senate race in 2016. Rachel Zenzinger defeated incumbent Senator Laura Woods by just under 1,500 votes. It was actually a rematch from 2014 when Woods won the seat by 663 votes after Zenzinger had been appointed to seat following Evie Hudak’s resignation in the face of a potential recall election. Hudak had defeated Lang Sias by just under 600 votes in 2012. Suffice to say that this has historically been a very competitive district. |
