DescriptionLA PAZ — Bolivian President Evo Morales agreed Sunday to hold new elections after a damning international report found serious irregularities in an Oct. 20 vote won by the leftist leader.

Morales' victory last month sparked widespread protests around the country.

The Organization of American States (OAS) issued a report earlier Sunday that said the October vote should be annulled after it had found "clear manipulations" of the voting system that meant it could not verify the result.

Morales, speaking at a press conference in the capital La Paz, also said he would replace the country's electoral body. The department has come under heavy criticism after an unexplained halt to the vote count sparked widespread allegations of fraud and prompted the OAS audit.

The weekslong standoff over the disputed election escalated over the weekend as police forces were seen joining anti-government protests and the military said it would not "confront the people" over the issue.

The situation is too foregone. The sounds for new elections you hear are actually ambulance sirens coming to save Morales as he bunkers down in his now unprotected presidential palace (its police detail slipped away overnight). Not since the final hours of Nero as the mob rushed the Golden House gates have we seen such drama.

Units of the armed forces have joined the protests. The NY Times reports on "throngs of police, many still in uniform, marching with protesters in La Paz". Military chiefs have broken ranks, some plead "neutrality", some say 'hang him high' but all, most ominously, refuse to take the President's orders. Morales allies, his governors, his mayors, even MAS-IPSP apparatchiks swell up the hordes by the hour.

The people are fed up... they see that the emperor has no clothes, and they smell blood.

This is just another attempted coup of a Latin Socialist Leader.

I 100% agree with you here, and I know I'm completely changing the subject, but what is your opinion on Venezuela? I'm guessing it is similar to what my perspective was until I got a friend who currently lives in Venezuela.

It's wild how us leftists will unequivocally support authoritarians just because they are left-wing as well.

The one thing that really bothers me about the leftist youth in this county are their authoritarian leanings.

I agree with you, and I will defend democracy no matter what, but one appealing thing about authoritarian systems of government seems to be that they avoid the debate and obstruction from the opposition which often plague modern democratic societies. For example, China has rapidly been improving their infrastructure while the American legislature (or at least the Senate) has been doing absolutely nothing lately as our roads are falling apart.

I'm guessing experience on the internet. Like just join any Leftist Facebook group and I promise that you will eventually come across an argument on whether Stalin and Mao didn't kill enough "revisionist scum." Believe me, I was a Marxist-Leninist for a year. I've learned there is a middle ground when it comes to killing every rich person vs. not taxing them at all and letting them continue to exploit the working class.
