Description | LONDON—British Prime Minister Boris Johnson called for a snap general election on Dec. 12, saying one was needed to ensure his Brexit deal goes through, but he would need the backing of some opposition lawmakers for a ballot to take place.
Mr. Johnson said the government would give more time to lawmakers to study and pass his Brexit deal—one Parliament backed in principle earlier this week—but only on the condition an election is scheduled for Dec. 12. He complained that lawmakers would otherwise take too much time scrutinizing the deal.
His Conservative Party is in a minority in Britain’s House of Commons, so he can’t unilaterally trigger a fresh election.
The government said it would bring a motion on Monday to Parliament calling for the election. For it to pass, he would need a two-thirds majority and thus require support from the main opposition Labour Party. |
