Description | AMSTERDAM, Netherlands (AP) - An animal rights activist who confessed to the first political assassination in modern Dutch history went on trial Thursday for shooting populist politician Pim Fortuyn last year.
Volkert van der Graaf, 33, was arrested minutes after Fortuyn was gunned down in a parking lot outside a radio studio on May 6, 2002, just days before general elections. Fortuyn, a brash gay academic and columnist, was running for prime minister on an anti-immigration platform.
