Description | VIRGINIA BEACH
Hoping to exploit public dissatisfaction with the major-party candidates, a Navy retiree from Virginia Beach is mounting an independent write-in candidacy for governor.
John Parmele Jr., who has run unsuccessfully in the past for the Virginia Beach City Council and the Virginia House of Delegates, announced his candidacy last week.
Parmele, 70, retired from a 23-year Navy career in 1984 as a master chief petty officer.
On his campaign website, Parmele says he is opposed to oil drilling off the Virginia coast, favors requiring a government-issued photo ID to vote, opposes uranium mining and hydraulic fracturing - or "fracking" - and favors legalizing and regulating medical marijuana.
The Nov. 5 ballot will feature three candidates for governor: Republican Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli, Democrat Terry McAuliffe and Libertarian Robert Sarvis.
More information about Parmele can be found on his website, www.parmeleforgovernor.com. |
