DescriptionLatvia’s president nominated populist party candidate Aldis Gobzems on Monday to become prime minister and try to form a government.

Gobzems of the KPV LV party has two weeks to put together a Cabinet and secure majority support in parliament after an inconclusive election last month, Reuters reported.

The populist KPV LV party — which stands for “who owns the state?” — came in second place in the October election, while the Russia-friendly Harmony party garnered the most support. In the past, other parties have worked together to prevent Harmony from entering a ruling coalition, despite its status as the most popular party, and Gobzems said Monday he has ruled out forming a coalition with Harmony.

Gobzems is the second candidate to attempt to form a government after Jānis Bordāns of the New Conservative Party failed to gather enough support earlier this month.
