DescriptionFour of six Republican candidates for Northeast Texas' new congressional district have uncorked their campaign war chests since the new year began.

Of $541,400 the candidates spent on the entire campaign, the four spent $431,400 since Jan. 1, according to their latest campaign reports listing finances from New Year's Day through Feb. 18.

Longview lawyer John Graves, former 12th Court chief justice Louie Gohmert of Tyler, San Augustine business consultant Emily Mathews, state Rep. Wayne Christian, R-Center, Nacogdoches eye surgeon Dr. Lyle Thorstenson and program analyst Larry Thornton of Nacogdoches are on Tuesday's GOP ballot.

The winner will face Democratic incumbent Max Sandlin of Marshall in the Nov. 2 general election to represent a dozen counties from Sabine and Angelina north to Smith, Upshur and Marion counties. The district also includes the southeast corner of Cass County.

Two of the candidates, Mathews and Thornton, did not electronically file the latest reports with the Federal Elections Commission. They are not required to do so, if their fund-raising or spending is below a set level, but neither was immediately available Wednesday for comment.

By Feb. 18, Christian retained the most cash on hand with $217,500. The representative took in $33,700 since the new year, for $52,160 during the cycle.

Christian spent $61,700 since Jan. 1, representing the lion's share of $96,700 he spent on the campaign.

Thorstenson reported $194,900 cash on hand. That was after taking in $86,900 since the new year and $303,300 for the entire campaign. The doctor has spent $208,700 during the election cycle, $165,200 of that since the new year.

Gohmert took in $61,477 since Jan. 1, to build his contribution total to $244,100; he had $52,300 on hand by Feb. 18. He reported spending $165,000 during this reporting period, and $187,200 since he began running.

Graves gathered $177,900 since announcing his bid, $25,800 of that during 2004; he had $83,400 c
