DescriptionSlovenian Prime Minister Miro Cerar offered his resignation Wednesday after the Supreme Court ruled against a referendum on a major railway project.

The court ruled earlier in the day that there should be a new referendum vote, arguing that the government’s support of the project during the campaign could have affected the outcome of the vote, according to the Associated Press.

Voters last September backed the government’s plans to build an additional 27 kilometers of railway between the city of Divaca and the port of Koper — a project worth €1 billion, according to Reuters.

Cerar said he would continue to hold his position until a new government can be formed, Reuters reported. But with the country set to hold an election in June, it was not immediately clear whether his resignation would move the vote forward.
