DescriptionSCITUATE, R.I. — State Sen. Nicholas Kettle was arrested Friday on charges of video voyeurism and extortion.

The state police, who had been investigating Kettle for at least a month, arrested the 27-year-old Coventry Republican at his job at an antique car equipment business in Richmond on Friday afternoon. They seized more than a dozen computers, mobile phones and hard drives belonging to Kettle and others from the state lawmaker’s home and office, according to an arrest report.

Kettle was taken to state police headquarters in Scituate, where he was arraigned by a bail commissioner and then taken to the Adult Correctional Institutions to be held.

State police Lt. Col. Joseph Philbin said the video voyeurism charge was from a state police affidavit alleging the lawmaker shared pornographic images of his now ex-girlfriend without her consent.

Two extortion charges were handed down by a grand jury and remain under seal, Philbin said, preventing him from commenting on them.

The timing of Kettle’s arrest Friday afternoon meant he could not appear in Superior Court, Providence to answer the grand jury indictment until Monday and will have to remain behind bars over the weekend.

Kettle’s attorney, Paul DiMaio, visited his client at state police headquarters Friday afternoon and said Kettle still hadn’t been told what the extortion charge was based on.

“He said, ‘I don’t know what the hell they are talking about,’” DiMaio told The Providence Journal. “Extortion can be a lot of different fact patterns. So I don’t know what the allegation is or who it is from.”
