Description | "Bret Schundler showed today that he still has some grass roots support among Republicans. But he didn't have much competition.
The former Jersey mayor and 2001 GOP gubernatorial nominee topped a straw poll of approximately 400 Middlesex County Republicans at their convention in Edison.
Schundler received 214 votes. The only other candidate on the ballot, former independent counsel Robert Ray, was backed by 43 Republicans. A scattering of write-in votes were entered for several Republicans, including state Senator Thomas H. Kean, Jr. (R-Westfield),
Assemblyman Samuel D. Thompson (R-Old Bridge), and State Sen. Diane Allen (R-Edgewater Park)."
