DescriptionUber will lose its license to operate private hire vehicles in London at the end of the month, after London’s transport authority concluded today the U.S. firm demonstrated a “lack of corporate responsibility.”

The decision could force Uber to close its operations in London, a city that was initially one of the most receptive to the app, and potentially deals one of the hardest blows to Uber’s global expansion plans.

Transport for London said it concluded Uber London Ltd. “is not fit and proper to hold a private hire operator license,” and cited a number of factors including its approach to “reporting serious criminal offenses” and its use of Greyball software in London.

Such software can allegedly be used to block regulatory bodies from gaining full access to the app and hinder law enforcement.

Uber said it will appeal the decision and challenged Transport for London’s conclusion it was not “fit and proper” to hold a license. It can operate until it has exhausted all appeals.
