Description | Benton County voters in November will get the chance to make theirs the first county in Oregon to adopt ranked-choice voting.
If approved, the measure would change the way officials are chosen in general and special elections. Primaries will not be affected by the initiative.
Ranked-choice voting, also known as instant run-off voting, allows voters to select candidates in order of preference. Under this method, voters can rank up to three candidates by order of preference when filling out their ballots.
A candidate netting an outright majority of votes wins. Lacking that, an elimination process begins, with the candidate receiving the fewest first-choice votes being eliminated. The voter's second-ranked candidate then gets that vote, with the elimination process continuing until one candidate receives the majority needed for election. |
