| Description | Romanian prosecutors on Monday announced corruption charges against Prime Minister Victor Ponta, amid growing calls for the embattled leader to step down.
Ponta faces charges of fraud, tax evasion, and money laundering — all from his time as a lawyer between 2007-2008, before he became prime minister, according to Romania’s National Anti-Corruption Directorate.
Ponta has denied the charges.
Some of Ponta’s property has already been seized for the duration of the investigation, prosecutors say.
Investigations of Ponta opened on June 5, as part of a wider graft probe in a Romanian political system long troubled by corruption.
At the center of the accusations are the DNA’s claim that Ponta used forged invoices, a €41000 sum that paid for his two luxury Bucharest apartments and Mitsubishi Lancer, to cover up dirty business deals with a fellow party-member, Dan Sova.
Once Ponta became prime minister, he appointed Sova to high-level political positions, including minister of transport. |
