Description | Sen. Alan Olsen was eating lunch alone in his Capitol office June 1 when he realized something wasn't right.
He had turned down a lunch invitation from his staff because he had a funny pain in his chest — kind of like heartburn. Then his shoulder blades started hurting, and he broke out in a cold sweat.
He didn't know it, but he'd be rolling through the rotunda on a gurney within an hour.
Olsen, R-Canby, returned to the Oregon Legislature on Monday a week after he had a mild heart attack. In a tearful speech on the Senate floor, he credited Sen. Alan Bates, D-Medford, with saving his life.
Bates, an osteopathic primary care physician, was the first person Olsen tried to reach last week. Olsen, not wanting to call 911 and embarrass himself if the chest pain was just heartburn, called Bates' office. |
