DescriptionLibertarians Can Provide Two Useful Functions
by Ed Clark

All Americans and probably billions of individuals across the globe are
reacting with loathing to the terrorist attacks of September 11. The desire
to take action to avenge the victims and punish the perpetrators is very
strong and widespread.

In this context Libertarians, while joining in the condemnation of mass
murder, can perform two useful functions. First, to urge that the pursuit of
the murders should be vigorously pursued through legal channels. Trial,
conviction and punishment in the World Court in the Hague, along the lines
of the recent and ongoing trials of military and political leaders of the
former Yugoslavia and of the Bosnian Serb "government," should be the
example for September 11. Such steps would provide the widest scope for
public approval of the punishment and force the support of many who would
condemn unilateral military action by the United States.

Secondly, we should continue to point out that the continued military
intervention by the United States in other countries provides the self
justification for such murderers and, of probably greater importance,
provides the basis for the significant support that terrorist groups enjoy
in many parts of the world.

Both of these steps work together to isolate the criminals, to gain support
for their punishment and, hopefully, to eliminate the type of retaliation
that will build new bands of terrorists eager to replicate of exceed the
horrors of September 11.
