Description | Former Assemblywoman Lori Saldaña said Tuesday that she's being encouraged by progressive Democrats and others to reconsider her initial reluctance to run as a replacement candidate for Mayor Bob Filner.
"I am listening to people making the case of why I would be a good candidate," she said. "Also, there is the consideration that right now we have no women in the race."
Late last week, Saldaña told U-T San Diego that she was returning to teaching this fall and was turning aside calls for her to run. That's changed, she said, as she hears from more people concerned about former Assemblyman Nathan Fletcher's history of changing party affiliation - Republican to independent to Democrat - and the current prospective field of other likely high-profile candidates all coming from the City Council.
Those other candidates, Council President Todd Gloria, a Democrat, and Councilman Kevin Faulconer and former Councilman Carl DeMaio -- both Republicans -- are all mulling whether to run to fill the unexpired term Filner, who resigned last week effective at 5 p.m. this Friday. |
