DescriptionIn September, look forward to a statement from Festersen that goes something like this, “After careful consideration with my family I have decided to finish what I started and continue to serve this great city and to further our efforts to make Omaha a destination city for families and businesses.” (Or something to that effect.) Festersen, and probably State Senator Heath Mello, will fight it out for Mayor of Omaha in 2017 on the Democratic ticket.

What is more conceivable and quite probable is that former State Senator Brad Ashford challenges Terry. There have been some reports that Brad Ashford would run for U.S. Senate on the Democratic ticket. Let’s put that to bed right now. It will not happen, but it does keep his name in the press. Ashford is well liked in Douglas County and has name ID in Sarpy because of his work as a statewide official. Ashford clearly wants be in public service at a high level and this is the only logical path.

Could Ashford beat Terry in a non-Presidential year? Probably not, but Ashford has lost elections badly in the past and his ego can handle defeat. For the reasons stated above, look for a Terry-Ashford battle in 2014.
