DescriptionTV spots pay off in Ryan, Hull Senate bids

In a testament to the power of money in politics, multimillionaire Democrat Blair Hull and wealthy Republican Jack Ryan have surged ahead of rivals in their U.S. Senate campaigns by bankrolling big television ad blitzes, a new Tribune/WGN-TV poll shows.

A Tribune/WGN-TV poll last month showed no clear leader in either party race. Since then, however, Hull and Ryan have capitalized on their superior financial resources to saturate the Chicago television market with ads.

As a result, support for the two has grown among likely primary voters, and many of their opponents, who have run more modest advertising efforts, have lost ground.

Hull, of Chicago, was backed by 24 percent of likely Democratic voters surveyed, and his closest rival, state Sen. Barack Obama of Chicago, had the support of 15 percent. Eleven percent said they would vote for Illinois Comptroller Dan Hynes, 9 percent backed Cook County Treasurer Maria Pappas and 5 percent supported Gery Chico, former Chicago Board of Education president.

In the GOP campaign, Ryan's backing more than doubled in the last month to 30 percent, leapfrogging dairy owner Jim Oberweis, who received support from 12 percent of likely Republican voters, down slightly from last month's poll.
