Pappas' finances remain mystery

| Description | With the U.S. Senate primary five weeks off, Cook County Treasurer Maria Pappas is the only one of the five major Democratic contenders who has yet to disclose any of the information about her personal finances required by federal law.
Pappas formally entered the race Oct. 30 and was required by the federal Ethics in Government Act to have filed a financial disclosure report by Dec. 6, with details of her wealth and that of her husband, Peter Kamberos, a real-estate investor with extensive holdings.
She has been granted two extensions by Senate officials who oversee compliance with the law, but she is running up against an absolute deadline of Feb. 17. The later she files, the harder it is for her rivals to closely examine the information.
In addition, Pappas is the only one of the five candidates who has not made her federal income-tax returns available to reporters. Campaign spokesman Jim Allen said Friday that Pappas intends to release her tax returns, but not those of her husband. The other married candidates filed joint returns. |
