Description | John McCain is stepping into local politics in Illinois, but it has nothing to do with former rival Barack Obama.
The 2008 presidential contender and senator from Arizona is weighing in on one suburban Cook County mayor race. McCain has endorsed Ron Drake for Arlington Heights village president.
Drake announced the endorsement Monday on his campaign website, which quotes McCain as saying: "I know that Arlington Heights would benefit from Ron's positive problem-solving agenda, his focus on economic and community development, and his commitment to open and honest government."
Drake, 55, was the mayor of Avondale, Ariz., from 2000 to 2006. Leading the Phoenix-area suburb, Drake said he worked with McCain, a fellow Republican, on issues related to nearby Luke Air Force Base. In 2006, Drake ran unsuccessfully to represent Arizona in the U.S. House — a race for which McCain also endorsed him, according to the Drake campaign. |
