DescriptionStating what will be a central theme for whoever wins the Republican mayoral nomination this year, participants in a candidate forum this morning warned that the gains of the Bloomberg and Giuliani years were more tenuous than they might seem.

“The most disastrous thing that could happen to New York is we go back to a Democratic candidate with the attitude they have," said John Catismatidis, the supermarket and oil magnate.

Joe Lhota, the former top Giuliani aide and M.T.A. chairman, warned that the progress the city has made in the past two decades on quality of life, safety, education, cleanliness, are all now at risk.

"Don’t ever be lulled into thinking that that transformation is permanent and there forever," he said. "It requires an enormous amount of care. It requires us to look at it and determine how can we take it and bring it to the next level. Because it can easily slide back to where it was. That’s why I’m running for mayor."
