Description | "California's top Democrats were scrambling Thursday to defuse same-sex marriage as a political wedge issue that could cause them problems at the polls in November.
As a new statewide poll shows half of Californians oppose same-sex marriage and hints of potential difficulties among Democratic and independent voters, key California Democratic officeholders began to express doubts about same-sex marriage, and some were openly unhappy the matter had become an object of national politics.
U.S. Sen. Dianne Feinstein, in her first public statement on same-sex marriage, scolded San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom for providing an opening for the Bush White House and Republicans.

As if to signal the difficult politics of same-sex marriage, U.S. Sen. Barbara Boxer, running for re-election, said Thursday, "The mayor has decided to challenge state law. My opinion is that state law is fair and appropriate because it gives equal rights and responsibilities to all citizens." |
