DescriptionHaving lost to a dead candidate this week, R.W. Bray has announced his intention to try to defeat live ones for the same seat.

Bray was the Republican nominee for the state Senate District 6 seat, a safe Democratic district that includes Houston's East End. Longtime incumbent Mario Gallegos died last month, too close to the election to have his name removed from the ballot. Gallegos posthumously won Tuesday with 70 percent of the vote.

Bray said in an email he believes he has a better shot in a special election without the straight-ticket boost Democrats got from Tuesday's special election.

"I look forward to the special (election) because now my district has the opportunity to vote for authentic representation," Bray said. Bray said African-American voters in Tuesday election were more likely to vote straight-ticket Democrat in part for the chance to re-elect a fellow African-American. Bray, who is African-American, believes he can swing some of those voters to him in a special election.
