DescriptionNot long ago, this looked like an election where the fine old tradition of ticket splitting would come roaring back to life in Wisconsin.

Republican Tommy Thompson, with his history of crossover appeal, was favored to win a U.S. Senate seat. Incumbent Democrat Barack Obama was favored to capture Wisconsin's 10 electoral votes.

Back in February, almost 10% of likely voters said they planned to vote for both Thompson and Obama, according to a poll by Marquette Law School.

Could that situation possibly last in the polarized Wisconsin of 2012?

Apparently not.

With each passing month, voters here have hardened along party lines in the Senate race, Thompson has lost most of his crossover support, and the number of would-be ticket splitters in the state has withered.

In Marquette's 2012 polling, Thompson's support among Democrats has declined from 16% in June to 12% in August to 8% in September to 5% today.

And the percentage of likely voters backing both Obama and Thompson has shrunk from 9% in February to 6% in August to 2% in October. (The number of Mitt Romney-Tammy Baldwin voters - also ticket splitters - was always much smaller and represents less than 2% of likely voters in Marquette's last survey).
