Description | Whose base is least disillusioned? If you want to be more positive, will tea-partiers or Obama supporters more closely approach their electoral fervor from the last time around?
Those could be the deciding factors in the suddenly white-hot, talk-of-the-town race between first-term incumbent Republican Steve Southerland and Democratic challenger Al Lawson, the two men filling the airwaves in their quest for Congress.
If you watch broadcast or cable television, it’s going to be hard to avoid this race for Florida’s 2nd Congressional District.
Federal campaign-finance reports show Southerland with $803,000 in cash on hand as of Oct. 1. Lawson was sitting on $180,000 as of Sept. 30.
That’s the least of it. There’s plenty of money flying around beyond the campaigns.
The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee has put out three ads so far in support of Lawson’s campaign. The DCCC has reserved $336,000 worth of ads in these last three weeks of the campaign. (In a delicious turn of events, the DCCC early on backed Leonard Bembry in the Democratic primary, much to Lawson’s consternation. But now Lawson benefits from the broadcast reservations the DCCC made on his opponent’s behalf as money flows back for him.) Independent expenditures are playing a part as well, with Democratic Patriot Majority USA spending $125,950 in ads against Southerland. |
