Description"State Rep. David Nangle on Saturday became the second prominent Lowell Democrat to back U.S. Sen. Scott Brown, making what he called a last-minute decision to endorse the Republican at his annual fundraiser.

Nangle was sworn into the House of Representatives with Brown in 1999, when both men were first elected to the chamber. They sat next to each other at the Statehouse for a time, and have remained friends since Brown moved on to the state Senate and then the U.S. Senate.

"Whether you're a Republican, a Democrat or an independent, what matters to me is what kind of individual you are," Nangle said after making the endorsement Saturday afternoon. "They're good parents, a good family, raising two wonderful daughters."

Nangle said that in recent years he has heard more and more from constituents who are tired of gridlock in Washington, and that he believes Brown is a man who can compromise and rise above party labels.

"People I speak to on a general basis get tired of the gridlock and the partisan efforts that take place in Washington on a daily basis," Nangle said. "I've been a Democrat my entire life, but I've learned that today people are voting the person more than the party."

Nangle made the announcement at an annual fundraiser his cousin Phil Nangle has organized since 1998. David Nangle said he was helping to prepare for this year's event at Lenzi's Millhouse Restaurant when he made his decision."
