DescriptionThirty-seven days to the Nov. 6 election, 22 days to early voting. Illinois, still broke and broken, desperately needs smarter and gutsier state legislators who will stop the downward spiral — first by adopting controversial pension reforms.

Yet in this election, more than half of Illinois' voters have no choice in who their state lawmakers will be. Majority Democrats drew new districts to assure their party as many seats as possible. Mapmakers gerrymandered many of these uncontested districts in such lopsided fashion that only one party has a realistic chance to win. In a few districts, legal challenges by one candidate succeeded in pushing another off the ballot.

You'll begin seeing our endorsements soon. And remember, you don't need a constitutional amendment to enforce term limits on your own legislators. If your incumbents failed you — if they haven't been forces for solving Illinois' ruinous problems — then vote them out. Similarly, you weaken a legislative leader when you defeat one of his or her House or Senate candidates.

We're investing a huge amount of time in evaluating legislative candidates in every contested race. Come the election, we hope you'll do whatever you can for broke and broken Illinois.
