Description | Blanco gains political access
The Associated Press
February 15, 2004
BATON ROUGE — As the nation’s newest governor, in office for a month, and as a Democrat, Kathleen Blanco seemed an unlikely choice for a Republican president’s invitation to visit Iraq.
Nor are most first-time governors able to form a relationship with the president and his staff, a move that at least means Blanco has access and, as she once again demonstrated Friday at the White House, will use it to Louisiana’s advantage.
Blanco’s invitation was delivered the night of Feb. 4 and the trip began Feb. 8, indicating she was a last-minute addition, as the other five governors on the trip had been invited the week before.
