Description | Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst announced today that he plans to run for lieutenant governor in 2014.
Dewhurst, who lost a bid for U.S. Senate to fellow Republican Ted Cruz last month, made the announcement after a morning meeting of the Texas delegation at the Republican National Convention.
“I fully expect that I’ll run for re-election,” he told reporters.
Agriculture Commissioner Todd Staples, also a Republican, reiterated his plans to run for lieutenant governor in 2014 as well.
“There’s a lot of time between now and then,” Staples said. “There’s no way to know who will put their name on the dotted line.”
Land Commissioner Jerry Patterson had already indicate that he would stay in the race regardless of Dewhurst’s decision.
A third potential challenger, Comptroller Susan Combs, was not immediately available for comment but we’ll update when we hear something from her team. |
