Akin camp doesn’t disagree with McCaskill website

| Description | An unusual thing happened in Missouri politics yesterday.
After U.S. Sen. Claire McCaskill opened her fall re-election campaign by launching a website attacking Republican primary winner Todd Akin on five major issues, his campaign responded by saying McCaskill got the facts right.
"I did not go into everything in each individual issue in depth, but what it looks like is basically things they consider bad but we don't," Akin spokesman Ryan Hite said of the material on truthaboutAkin.com [Link]
With the facts not in dispute, that leaves voters to decide whether they believe the website's basic message — that Akin is an extreme conservative who would do away with programs essential to the health and well-being of many Missourians.
On the website, McCaskill's campaign focuses on five issues — Medicare, Social Security, student aid for college, the minimum wage and tax breaks for oil companies. It says Akin wants to replace Medicare with vouchers for private insurance, privatize Social Security, end federal student aid and keep tax breaks for the oil companies, and that he opposes a federal minimum wage at any level. |
