Description For the second time in a little less than a year, U.S. Attorney Christopher J. Christie is apparently conducting an investigation into a top Republican official.

Today, several weeks after the Marlboro Township Council approved a resolution asking Christie to investigate questions raised about state Senate
Co-President John Bennett's financial dealings, a federal agent arrived at the township's municipal offices to subpoena financial records.

Marlboro Township Clerk Alida DeGaeta confirmed that a single agent showed up unannounced this morning, presented the subpoena to officials, and left after several minutes.

DeGaeta said the town would comply with the subpoena and gradually send the records to Christie's office within the next week. She said the agent did not examine any records while at the town's offices and did not leave with any evidence.

A spokesman for the U.S. Attorney's office said his office had no comment.

Many Republicans are said to be wary of the prospect of Bennett serving as a party leader as the GOP seeks to make Governor James E. McGreevey's ethical conduct an issue in this fall's legislative contests.
