DescriptionAttacking your opponent’s war record isn’t usually a winning recipe, but Rep. Joe Walsh (R-Ill.) went for it at a town hall event that is making waves across the Internet.

The Republican incumbent accused Tammy Duckworth, an Iraq War veteran who lost both her legs in a helicopter crash, of talking too much about her military service. Duckworth, a former helicopter pilot should follow in Vietnam veteran Sen. John McCain’s footsteps he said.

“Understand something about John McCain,” Walsh said at the town hall, first reported by the liberal site Think Progress. “His political advisers, day after day, had to take him and almost throw him against a wall and hit him against the head and say, ‘Senator, you have to let people know you served!”

“Now I’m running against a woman who, my God, that’s all she talks about,” he said. “Our true heroes, the men and women who served us, it’s the last thing they talk about.
