DescriptionOTTAWA—Bob Rae will not run to be leader of the federal Liberal party.

Rae broke the stunning news to Liberal MPs and Senators Wednesday morning during their weekly caucus meeting, Liberal sources told the Toronto Star.

He’s expected to publicly announce his intentions to step away from the leadership race at 12:15 p.m. on Parliament Hill.

Rae has been serving as interim leader since he took over from Michael Ignatieff, who resigned after the party’s disastrous showing in the May, 2011 election.

His surprise decision not to run for the leadership throws the race wide open.
