Description | Gov. Chris Gregoire, late on Monday, named a Republican state senator facing a tough reelection race to a $92,500-a-year, six-year term on the Washington Growth Management Hearings Board.
State Sen. Cheryl Pflug, R-Maple Valley, immediately withdrew as a candidate in the 5th District of eastern King County, a State Senate seat described as “competitive” in a briefing Saturday by the Republicans’ chief Senate strategist Brent Ludeman.
“I’m so excited by this opportunity, but there’s definitely a sadness in leaving office,” Pflug wrote on her Facebook page.
The Democrats are also excited at this opportunity. The withdrawal by Pflug gives them a prime pickup opportunity in a year when they are struggling to hold a majority in the Legislature’s upper chamber, and have several threatened incumbents. |
