Description | After weeks of scandalous revelations about her tempestuous affair with a methamphetamine addict, Alameda County Supervisor Nadia Lockyer said Friday she was resigning from office to recover from her own addiction and care for her 8-year-old son.
When asked in an exclusive interview to explain why she was quitting, Lockyer, who celebrates her 41st birthday Saturday, paused for a moment, tears welling in her eyes, and told this newspaper: "I'm resigning today as a mother, and as ... I don't like to say the word 'victim,' but as somebody that didn't realize how difficult it would be to heal from what I went through the last year."
The wife of state Treasurer Bill Lockyer, Nadia Lockyer began a public meltdown in February after reporting she'd been assaulted in a Newark hotel room by an ex-lover and then revealed she was going into rehab for "alcoholism and addiction." The two months since brought a series of sordid accusations -- from embarrassing text messages and voice mails to claims of blackmail.
"The public deserves and I think wants some answers and is tired of hearing about me and all this drama," Lockyer said Friday in an emotional interview from her Hayward hills home. "I do need to resign and really, really focus on my recovery from both the assault and that abusive relationship, healing my heart and my psyche." |
