DescriptionState Assemblyman Nathan Fletcher, one of four major candidates running for San Diego mayor, said Wednesday he's leaving the Republican Party to become an independent.

Fletcher, 35, has repeatedly said during the campaign that he is tired of the polarization that exists in politics today and the games played by both major political parties.

"I want to share with you a decision I've been struggling with for some time now," Fletcher said in a video released Wednesday morning. "Today I'm leaving the Republican Party, becoming an independent. In my heart, I believe it's what's right and what best reflects my values."

The change in party status is a bold move that will certainly draw attention for Fletcher, the least known candidate among the major candidates.
