Description | In my last article about France, I surmised that Socialist Francois Hollande will almost certainly be France’s next President.
That holds true today in a hypothetical runoff between Hollande and French President Nicolas Sarkozy of the UMP; however, the dynamics of the initial election have taken a huge turn.
Some observers thought that centrist Francois Bayrou of the Democratic Movement or reactionary Marine Le Pen of the National Front would be able to shake up the top two similiarly to how Le Pen’s father was able to beat out the Socialist Party’s candidate in 2002 for a spot in the top two runoff.
However, both Bayrou and Le Pen have stalled and even lost support making any chance of dislodging Sarkozy or Hollande from the runoff.
Though luckily, a fifth candidate has emerged from the bottom of the heap to make things interesting for the hungry French audience.
Jean Luc Melenchon has unified the far left parties of France into the united Left Front. He is now polling above Bayrou and if momentum remains constant, he will overtake Le Pen for third place by election day. |
