Description | I had a mixed reaction last week when I learned that a conservative group had launched a recall attempt against state Sen. Dale Schultz, R-Richland Center.
On one hand, I was unsurprised because recall elections have become a common trend in the state: Six Republican state senators and three of their Democratic colleagues faced recall elections last summer, while three more Republican senators are up for recall this spring. Likewise, Republican Gov. Scott Walker and Lt. Gov. Rebecca Kleefisch face a likely recall election this spring or summer.
As Schultz told The Associated Press after the announcement, “I think most legislators these days are fairly used to the notion of being recalled.”
However, the effort also surprises me because it could utterly backfire, shifting the balance of power in Wisconsin away from conservative Republicans, not toward them. In fact, there are four possible outcomes of an effort targeting Schultz, and only one of them works in favor of GOP hardliners. |
