Description | Rep. Derrick Smith, a Democrat from the West Side, hadn’t done much to distinguish himself in the Illinois House before Tuesday, but now he may be a recordholder.
Smith may have set the mark for serving the shortest time in office of any Chicago elected official before being arrested on corruption charges.
Smith, who was appointed to his seat just one year ago this month, had yet to even stand for election. His name will be on the ballot for the first time next Tuesday.
As nobody exactly keeps track of such records, I can’t say for sure that Smith holds it after his arrest by federal agents on charges of taking a $7,000 cash bribe.
But experts agree that if Smith doesn’t hold the distinction outright, he’s certainly a helluva contender. |
