Description | The Department of Justice has rejected a new Texas voter ID law, saying the state failed to show that its photo-ID requirement would not discriminate against minority voters, particularly Hispanics.
The law, passed by the Republican-controlled state legislature last year, requires voters to show a Texas driver's license or Department of Public Safety identification card.
The Houston Chronicle notes that a concealed handgun license is considered a valid ID under the law but not a student ID from Texas colleges and universities.
As a state with a history of voter discrimination, Texas is required under section 5 of the Voting Rights Act to get advance approval of voting changes from either the Justice Department or the U.S. District Court in Washington, D.C. |
