Kucinich won't run in Washington state, despite loss

| Description | Dennis Kucinich's Tuesday loss to fellow Ohio Democratic Rep. Marcy Kaptur spurred another round of speculation that Kucinich might run for one of Washington's three open congressional seats this year.
But Kucinich squashed that chatter Wednesday, telling reporters he will stay on and represent his Cleveland district through the end of his term in January 2013.
Kucinich campaign spokesman Andy Juniewicz pointed out Kucinich would have to resign his current seat if he were to move to Washington state to establish residency for a congressional run here.
Kucinich has no intention of doing that, Juniewicz said in an email: "He is committed to the residents of Ohio's 10th Congressional District and has no plans to resign."
Thus ends that political fantasy storyline, much to the relief of state Democratic Party Chairman Dwight Pelz, who had openly frowned on a Kucinich candidacy here.
A Washington state bid was always a long shot, despite Kucinich's frequent visits here last year.
Leaving aside the carpetbagger label he would have faced, Kucinich's earlier flirtations with the state came before our new congressional maps were set.
As it turned out, the 1st Congressional District, which had been most often mentioned as a possible destination for Kucinich, was made into a swing district unlikely to warm to Kucinich's lefty politics.
Washington state's candidate filing deadline is May 18, should Kucinich change his mind. |
