Description | Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell on Wednesday said he would not support a controversial bill requiring women undergo an invasive ultrasound before having an abortion.
“Mandating an invasive procedure in order to give informed consent is not a proper role for the state. No person should be directed to undergo an invasive procedure by the state, without their consent, as a precondition to another medical procedure,” said McDonnell in a statement.
McDonnell, a Republican who has been mentioned as a possible vice presidential candidate, had previously indicated his support for the concept in the legislation of “transvaginal ultrasound.”
But his statement Wednesday said he would consider the legislation only if it is amended to include a provision that an ultrasound wouldn’t be mandatory, among other changes he is seeking. |
